Celebrating Menstrual Hygiene Day
Empowering Girls with Knowledge, Confidence, and Dignity
Date: 28th May 2025
At Care for a Girl Uganda Limited (CFAGU Ltd), we believe that empowering girls begins with equipping them with both skills and knowledge especially when it comes to their health, hygiene, and self-worth. This May, we proudly celebrated Menstrual Hygiene Day on the 28th of May 2025, a day dedicated to raising awareness around menstrual health and hygiene, while also promoting dignity and empowerment for girls and young women.
This was not just a day of learning,it was a vibrant, joyful, and meaningful celebration for everyone at CFAGU. The event brought together our girls, CFAGU staff, and members of the community in a safe, supportive space where open conversations about menstruation were not only encouraged but celebrated.
What Made the Day Special?
The theme of the day was centered around “Raising Awareness and Promoting Health and Hygiene.”
Throughout the event, girls were engaged in discussions, workshops, and hands-on activities focused on:
- Understanding the menstrual cycle and how to manage it effectively.
- Breaking myths and stigma surrounding menstruation in their communities.
- Learning proper menstrual hygiene practices like safe pad use, regular changing, washing and drying undergarments, and personal grooming.
It was a safe space for girls to ask questions, share their experiences, and gain confidence in understanding their own bodies.
Distribution of Freedom Kits
A highlight of the event was the distribution of “Freedom Kits” to all the girls in attendance. Each kit included:
- Reusable sanitary pads
- Three pairs of knickers
- Soap and a small towel
An information leaflet on menstrual hygiene and self-care
These kits are more than just supplies—they are a symbol of freedom, dignity, and empowerment. They ensure that no girl has to miss school, hide in shame, or feel unprepared because of her period.
Hands-On Learning Continues: Soap & Bead Making
In addition to menstrual hygiene education, May was also a continuation of our growing Skills Development Initiative. The girls continued to sharpen their skills in liquid soap production and bead craft design.
- Participants successfully made 80 liter jerrycans of high quality liquid soap, building on techniques mastered over the past months.
- The beadwork also progressed impressively, with the girls learning new and more complex designs from stylish bracelets to beautiful necklaces.
What made this month even more exciting was that the soap and bead products made by the girls were sold during the Menstrual Hygiene Day event. Community members who attended the celebration were impressed by the girls’ craftsmanship and eagerly supported them by purchasing their handmade items. This not only created a valuable income opportunity but also showcased the girls’ growing confidence and entrepreneurial spirit.
These practical skills remain a core part of CFAGU’s mission to foster financial independence, build confidence, and empower girls to become leaders and entrepreneurs in their communities.
Community Involvement & Participation
The event attracted 31 participants, including community leaders who joined in supporting the cause. Their presence emphasized the importance of community-wide education around menstrual health and the role everyone can play in breaking the stigma and supporting young girls.
Lessons Learned & Impact
Girls developed a deeper understanding of the menstrual cycle and its management.
They explored the myths and cultural beliefs surrounding menstruation—and debunked them together.
Many shared that they now feel more confident, prepared, and less ashamed about their periods.
Staff and organizers also expanded their knowledge and awareness, especially through event preparation and research.
Looking Ahead
Menstrual Hygiene Day at CFAGU was not just a one-day event—it marked a continued commitment to health education, empowerment, and support for girls across Uganda. The smiles, the energy, and the courage shown by the girls reminded us why we do what we do.
Thank you to everyone who made this day a success. Together, we are changing the narrative around menstrual health and building a world where every girl can live with confidence, dignity, and opportunity—every day of the month.
Stay tuned for more updates from our programs and follow the incredible journey of our girls as they continue to learn, lead, and thrive!
